How Can Educational Institutes Use Social Media Channels

Learning strategies has evolved from studying textbooks to interaction and communication through the Internet.  Learning used to be limited to the physical space of a classroom but now technology has introduced wide variety of ways to learn. Online universities emerged and schools added online content to supplement their textbooks. However, with the introduction of social media, learning moved to another dimension. People around the world have embraced social media; it became an essential source of social interaction, and it definitely became an interest for all educators.

Using social media for education has increased from a 61% in 2008-2009 to 87% in 2009-2010 and reached 98% in 2010-2011. Tools such as instant messages, discussion forums, groups, and blogs are used for education through Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn.  Educational institutes use Twitter to update teachers and students with latest announcements. LinkedIn is utilized by admission professional and the usage increased from 0% in 2008-2009 to 47% in 2010-2011. However, blogging has preserved is constant rate of popularity which is about 48% during the last 3 years.

Educational institutions can utilize social media channels in many ways:

  1. Facebook and twitter can be used for announcements by schools and universities.
  2. Discussion on Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ to keep members updated.
  3. WordPress and Tumblr blogs can link important articles and information to other social media channels.

  5. Some schools allow full navigation of the campus through virtual platforms.
  6. School and colleges approach potential student through their online profiling.

What are MOOCs?

Technology facilitated a new way of learning that might change education forever.  Blog posts, discussion groups’ posts, videos and their responses, tweets’ tags can all be a huge network for learning.  Massive Open Online Learning, MOOC, affects how teachers teach and how students learn. MOOC is a catchy acronym for Massive Open Online Courses that was named by a pair of Canadian professors who saw the power of social online learning.  They saw a great idea in creating courses that can be accessed by students around the world who are interested in learning about a certain topic through distance education via the web. Some courses are free and some provide a certificate if completed. MOOC started in Silicon Valley at Stanford University in 2012.  Stanford University offered a few free MOOCs. Hundreds of thousands of students registered free. They opened up a world of opportunities for students who cannot leave the area they live in.

For teacher or a professor, instead of teaching a course for 20 students, now he/she can teach the course for 20 thousand students around the world. MOOCs has also introduced a concept of flipping the classroom.  Since students have already attended the course online, teachers can utilize the face-to-face time for one-on-one challenging discussions.

For a student, whether interested in lifelong learning or studying to complement a college course, it is an easy fast affordable access to information.  For example, when taking a “Genetics” course, student’s motivations might vary from a biology teacher who wants to update his information, someone who wants to breed animals, to someone who has a genetic disease and wants to learn more about it. Students can join Hangouts online with the teachers, or students can organize only hangouts for study groups.

Universities are racing to find their own place in the world of MOOCs combining time, brain and elite universities to produce education on a massive Scale.  With its large-scale availability, low cost, and question about credibility, MOOCs has created a momentum for new pathways for educations. This is not the end of the game but it is only the start.
